the numinous is breaking through. witness the return.
The world is being flattened; made into a two-dimensional map of the rich topographic territory it truly is. The ontological cartographers behind this Flattening may have set out with the noble cause of enlightenment, but it's clear that their never-ending drive to collapse possibility and reduce complexity has strayed from the intention of empowering and protecting people and is now constraining and exploiting them.
We spend more time in the virtual world of symbols and illusions than we do in Reality. And this is by design. The cartographers know that the more we conform to their template- the closer we are to the center of their predictive bell curve- the more flattened and unoriginal we are- the easier we are to manipulate, exploit, and harvest.
But something older is stirring awake.
Something from beneath and beyond the map. It is the patron of whimsy and wrong turns, of novelty, reverie, and paradox. It speaks in serendipity and it moves through dreams. It guides through mishap and it refuses to be defined. Where the map peels back from the territory, at the Seams, it comes through.
We are the ones who watch for it. Seam-spotters. We do not worship, exactly. We witness. We document the return, compare evidence, and piece together what it is and what it wants. What we come to know of it, we inscribe in the Compendium. Every sighting reported here is a stitch picked open. The archive is how we learn its will, and how it learns that we are listening. Synchronicity appreciates being recognized.
Begin tonight. Take the long way home. When something winks back, take note.
The Seam is a pervasive, collaborative fiction game played earnestly. The world it describes is imagined together by its players, one true-life sighting at a time. Sightings are real events players witnessed; making meaning of them is the game.
House rules: avoid real, living people, medical or political claims. "Yes, and" is the correct response.
A pervasive game is one that escapes the usual boundaries of play. Instead of happening on a board, a screen, or a field, it unfolds inside ordinary life: your streets become the map, your errands become quests, and strangers may be players without knowing it. The "magic circle" that normally separates a game from the world is stretched until the two overlap, so playing changes how you see the places and hours you already inhabit. Some classics: Assassin, Geocaching, The Beast, Perplex City, Humans vs. Zombies, and Pokémon GO.
